Day 223

"Your transgressions are uncovered"

Text: Ezekiel 21:24

THE WICKEDNESS OF ZEDEKIAH

There were many bad kings that ruled over Judah. Arguably, King Manasseh was one of the worst of rulers. Zedekiah was not far behind as far as wickedness was concerned.

“Therefore thus says the Lord God:
‘Because you have made your iniquity to be remembered,
in that your transgressions are uncovered,
so that in all your doings your sins appear—
because you have come to remembrance,
you shall be taken in hand.
‘Now to you, O profane, wicked prince of Israel,
whose day has come, whose iniquity shall end.””
Ezekiel 21:24-25

1. Three aspects of wickedness were highlighted:

a) There was his iniquity.

i) This suggests that Zedekiah had evil intentions in his heart.

ii) Wicked deeds came from the evil that lurked within him.

b) There were his transgressions.

i) He knew the laws of God.

ii) Transgress refers to the breaking of God’s laws.

iii) Zedekiah broke God’s laws deliberately.

c) There were many sins in his life.

i) As a king, he had many opportunities to do good for his people.

ii) He did not seek to fulfil his obligations as a king.

iii) He failed to honour the Lord and His laws.

2. He would be held accountable.

a) For his sins.

b) For his transgressions.

c) For his iniquity.

d) The evil that he had done would be remembered.

3. Divine judgment.

a) This would come from the Lord.

b) The sword of justice would be drawn against him.

c) He would be slain by Nebuchadnezzar.

d) The words of rebuke from God were very stern:

i) God called him “a profane and wicked prince”.

ii) The day of his judgment had come.

iii) By his death, his iniquity would come to an end.
