Exodus
"They forgot their Saviour, who had done great things in Egypt, wondrous works in the land of Ham, awesome things by the Red Sea." Psalm 106:21-22
Text: Exodus 32 : 7-8
STRONG REACTION FROM GOD
Was God aware of all that was happening down below the mountain? But of course! Swiftly He reacted and sent Moses down the mountain.
“And the LORD said to Moses,
‘Go, get down! For your people whom you have brought out
of the land of Egypt have corrupted themselves.
They have turned aside quickly out of the way
which I commanded them. They have made themselves
a molded calf, and worshiped it and sacrificed to it, and said,
‘This is your god, O Israel, that brought you out of the land
of Egypt!””
EXODUS 32:7-8
Moses could scarcely believe his ears! What God had just spoken sounded impossible! But there was no mistaking the ring of truth in what had been spoken.
1. “Go, get down!”
What an abrupt way to end a special 40 days-40 nights’ sojourn on Mount Sinai!
2. “For your people whom you brought out of the land of Egypt…”
Moses must have been troubled by God’s choice of words.
a) “Your people”
Shouldn’t God have said, “My people”?
b) “Whom you have brought out…”
Shouldn’t God have said, “Whom I have brought out?”
Something had upset God so badly, that even His choice of words frightened Moses!
3. “They have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them”
Just forty days! Moses had not been away all that long! How could the whole nation have turned aside from the way which God had commanded?
4. “They have made… a molded calf, and worshipped it and sacrificed to it”
How could this have happened? How could the children of Israel have committed such a terrible sin?
5. “This is your god, O Israel…”
God was citing the shouts of the people! Loud and firm was their acclamation that the golden calf was their Saviour!
