EXERCISING WISDOM IN THE KEEPING OF GOD’S LAWS

God gave many laws to Israel! Some laws regulated religious beliefs and practices. Other laws regulated social mores. Still others were given to ensure a high standard of justice in the land. How should one keep these many laws of God? A great word of advice concerning the keeping of God’s laws may be found in this text.

“And in all that I have said to you, be circumspect
and make no mention of the name of other gods,
nor let it be heard from your mouth.”
EXODUS 23:13

1. “Be circumspect”

The essence of this word of advice is “prudence”. The following elements may be found in this word:-

a) Good sense
b) Carefulness
c) Practical wisdom
d) Taking heed

God’s laws were never meant to be “mere knowledge”. His laws were meant to be understood and practised in daily living!

2. A practical example of being circumspect

An example of being circumspect is given here.

a) How does one keep the First three commandments of the Decalogue?
i) No other gods
ii) No carved images
iii) Name of God not to be taken for granted
b) Practical wisdom
i) “Make no mention of the name of other gods”
ii) “Nor let it be heard from your mouth”

TAKING THE LAWS OF GOD SERIOUSLY

Two wonderful ways in which one can take God’s laws seriously would be:-

1. Learn to love the Word of God

2. Learn to meditate on the Word of God
