Ephesians
Day
Day 341

"Above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one."

Text: Ephesians 6:16

APPRECIATING THE PROVISION OF THE SHIELD

Shields were an important part of ancient panoplies. There were two main types of shields used by the Romans.

1. The smaller convex shape type of shield

This was used in single combat. The shield, utilized well, will protect the soldier from grave harm.

2. The larger door-like shield (“thureon”)

Paul was making a reference to this type of shield in this text. Let us consider its usage:-

a) The focus is on soldiers working together

Soldiers would have to learn how to work together:-

i) Maneuvers had to be well coordinated to be effective.
ii) The strength of shields combined together is formidable.
iii) The Roman army was respected for developing and using shields in battle.
b) The design of the shields

These shields were designed to function effectively only when used in full co-operation with other soldiers.

FIERY DARTS

Fire was frequently used in ancient days as a weapon. Fiery arrows were shot from bows to attack enemies. When shields are well utilized, it provided excellent protection from arrows. The shields could even be raised over the head so as to provide shelter from arrows that were shot high up into the air.

THE SHIELD OF FAITH

It is not without significance that Paul compared faith to the shield. But wherein lies the comparison? Let us consider the following thoughts:-

1. Faith, like the shield, must be utilized.

2. Faith in God results in our being especially protected.

3. Faith is an entity that may be wielded by many people… together.

4. Faith, like a shield, offers tremendous protection from the attacks of the evil one.
