Ephesians
Day
Day 290

"So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself."

Text: Ephesians 5:28

LEARNING ABOUT HOW CHRIST LOVES THE CHURCH

The main theme in the Epistle of Paul to the Ephesians is “The Church”. That Christ loves the Church deeply is unquestionable:-

1. He poured out glorious blessings on the Church (Ephesians 1)

2. He gave His life for the Church (Ephesians 2)

3. He provided gifted people to care for the Church (Ephesians 3-4)

4. He expresses His love for the Church (Ephesians 5)

These expressions of the love of Christ should move the hearts of the believers deeply. Every good Christian husband should feel moved to emulate the example of the Lord Jesus.

APPLYING THE LESSONS LEARNED

How should the Christian husband apply these lessons?

1. The word “ought” (“opheilousin”)

This word is usually used in the following ways:-

a) There is a tremendous sense of “obligation” (“oughtness”).
b) There is a special sense of desire and commitment as well.
c) This “oughtness” is meant to be a continuing compelling force in life.

2. “Love… as their own bodies”

Ponder the following thoughts:-

a) There is a natural (“instinctive”) sense of caring for one’s body.
b) This instinct is potentially very strong.

3. Encouragement to persevere

Good would come to the person who follows through with keeping this admonition:-

a) The husband will reap rich benefits.
b) The amount of care given will result in good returns.
