Day 282

"Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord."

Text: Ephesians 5:22

A QUICK REVIEW OF EPHESIANS

In this short epistle, we are amazed to discover how Paul addressed so many, and so varied subjects. It is good to take a look at the wood lest we are overly absorbed by studying of the individual trees.

DIFFERENT SOCIAL GROUPINGS ADDRESSED

The epistle to the Ephesians is most interesting, in more ways than one. The apostle Paul wrote about a number of groupings in his short epistle:-

1. The ethnic Jewish Community (Assumed) (Ephesians 3:1-7) (Intimated)

2. The ethnic Gentile Community (Ephesians 2-3)

3. The gifted men and women in the Church (Ephesians 4:7-17)
(In particular, the officers of the Church- apostles, pastors-teachers)

4. The Christian Community/Individual (Ephesians 5:1-21)
(Ephesians 5:1-21 applies both to the community and the individual believer)

5. The Christian Family (Ephesians 5:22-33)

THEOLOGICAL AND PRACTICAL APPROACHES

In all of Paul’s addresses, he was guided by two principles he applied consistently:-

1. Theology

a) Reference was made to the Old Testament Scriptures.
b) Reference was also made to the Revelation of truths from the Lord.
c) New and deeper theological thoughts were expounded (e.g. the Doctrine of the Church).

2. Practical Ramifications

a) Theology was never discussed without considering practical ramifications.
b) Admonition was established on the highest moral ground.
c) All believers are challenged to seriously apply the great theological truths expounded in their daily life.
