Ephesians
"Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks."

THE WORD “FITTING”
In order to emphasize the significance of his admonition, Paul used two different words/phrases, both of which were translated “fitting”. In order to appreciate what Paul wrote, we need to examine the words at a deeper level.
1. “As is fitting for saints” (Ephesians 5:3)
This was the first phrase. The word translated “fitting” is the Greek “prepo”. This word includes the following ideas:-
a) That which is “seemly”
b) Or “proper”
c) Or “suitable”.
The Christian faith must be displayed by a lifestyle that is seemly and proper.
2. “Which are not fitting” (Ephesians 5:4)
A different Greek word is employed here. The word used is “aneko”. The word contains the following ideas:-
a) The emphasis is on “obligation”.
b) The focus is on “duty”.
OBLIGATIONS
Paul wrote with understanding of “social obligations”. In some social circles, pressure is put on all to conform to the norm… “foolish talking and coarse jesting”. The apostle Paul insists that the believer is not under obligation to follow the ways of the world. However, the believer is under obligation to hold fast to that which is his Christian duty, namely “the giving of thanks”.
IN DIRECT CONTRAST TO THE WORLD
The believer is to be careful how he is to use his tongue. He must choose not to employ the language of the world. Instead he must engage in “the giving of thanks” (“eucharistia”). Instead of engaging in foolish, obscene conversations, the believer is urged to speak differently.
The phrase “giving of thanks” translates “eucharistia”. The believer’s heart is so full of gratitude to God and love for Him, that he finds himself constantly giving thanks to Him. The words that proceed from the mouth of the Christian should be full of thanksgiving to God for His manifold blessings.
