Ephesians

Ephesians
Day
Day 225

"But you have not so learned Christ, if indeed you have heard Him, and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus."

Text: Ephesians 4:20-21

IF INDEED YOU HAVE HEARD HIM

This is a most fascinating statement. How should we understand this statement?

1. Taken literally

It is possible, by a great stretch of imagination, that some of Paul’s readers had actually heard Jesus preaching and teaching. However, this would probably not be the best way to understand this statement.

2. Taken figuratively

It is wiser to take this statement figuratively. This conclusion is acceptable when we consider the following reasons:-

a) Jesus ministered mainly to Israel (not Gentiles).
b) Paul’s main ministry was to Gentiles.
c) Paul’s letter though read by Jews was essentially directed to Gentile believers.

AND HAVE BEEN TAUGHT BY HIM

How do we understand this statement? How may those who have not heard or seen Jesus speak of having “been taught by Him”? If we understand the use of figures of speech, this phrase is perfectly acceptable. Let us consider the following thoughts:-

1. Christ is spoken of as the One through whom the great blessings of God are given (Cf. Ephesians 1)

2. As the Foundation of the Church (Cf. Ephesians 2:20)

3. As the One through whom we have access to God (Cf. Ephesians 2:18)

4. It follows that He may be spoken of as the One who teaches (through His messengers)

AS THE TRUTH IS IN JESUS

Is it possible that some could take advantage of the use of a figure of speech, and claim that he had been taught by Christ Himself? What may be done to avoid possible abuse? Paul suggested just one thing that would effectively rule out wild claims of having been taught by a Divine Being.

Anyone who claims special supernatural enlightenment must contend with this vital thought. All truth must be centered in Jesus Himself. Let us recall what He once said to His disciples. He made Himself not just the Expositor of truth, but the epitome of truth itself.

I am the Way, the Truth and the Life.
