A VERY FIRM FAITH
Paul’s prayer was a lofty and profound one. Few prayers are as deep in thought, and wide in extent. How could Paul have prayed as he did? The answer lies in the text above.
1. To Him who is able
Not everyone can make such a statement of faith. When Sarah was told that she would bear a son to Abraham, she laughed. She could scarcely believe that it was possible. That prompted a word from the Lord.
And the LORD said to Abraham,
‘Why did Sarah laugh, saying,’
‘Shall I surely bear a child, since I am old?’
Is anything too hard for the LORD?
GENESIS 18:13-14
As far as Paul was concerned, he had absolutely no difficulties in believing that God could grant his intercessory petitions.
2. Basis of this firm faith in God
How did Paul have such a firm faith in God? How did he arrive at his level of faith?
a) Knowledge of God
Paul was an astute scholar. He had devoted his whole life to the study of the Scriptures. His knowledge of God enabled him to pray as he did.
b) Experiences in life and ministry
Paul had wide experience in ministry. He traveled extensively to preach the Gospel. He had to endure much hardship in his ministry. In all his experiences, he saw how God would always come to his rescue. God had demonstrated His power to him again and again. These experiences enabled him to have a strong faith in God.
c) Sustaining of a strong relationship with God
Paul was wise and diligent in the maintenance of a vital relationship with God. Three special relationships were maintained:-
i) With God as “Father”
ii) With Jesus as his Lord and Master
iii) With the Spirit of God who revealed great truths to him
THE NEED TO HAVE A STRONG FAITH
It is obvious that we need to have a similarly strong faith, if we are to pray with the kind of certainty Paul possessed. Can we say with full confidence that God is able to hear and answer our prayers?
