"All things come alike to all"

Text: Ecclesiastes 9:2

THE STRUGGLE TO FIND MEANING IN LIFE

Solomon continued to express how he struggled to find “meaning” in life. There were so many categories to consider. His focus was that “one event that happens” to all!

“All things come alike to all:
One event happens to the righteous and the wicked;
To the good, the clean, and the unclean;
To him who sacrifices and him who does not sacrifice.
As is the good, so is the sinner;
He who takes an oath as he who fears an oath.”
Ecclesiastes 9:2

1. “All things come alike to all”

a) The predictable things

i) Some things are predictable.

ii) Things will happen as expected.

b) The unpredictable

ii) Some other things are not predictable.

iii) The unpredictable would result.

2. “One event happens”

a) This was what he observed.

b) This bothered him.

3. Comparisons observed

a) “The righteous and the wicked”

This “one event” happens to both equally.

b) “To the good, the clean, and the unclean”

One might hope or expect things to occur differently. But this would not be.
The “one event” would happen to both the clean and the unclean.

c) “To him who sacrifices and him who does not sacrifice”

There are those who are worshipful and there are those who are not worshipful.
The same “one event” would happen to both groups.

d) “As is the good, so is the sinner”

There are some who may be called “good” and those who are “sinners”.
But the same “one event” would happen to both parties.

e) “He who takes an oath as he who fears an oath”

There are those who take oaths and those who do not!
But the same “one event” would be experienced by both individuals.
