Day 99

"And does not sin"

Text: Ecclesiastes 7:20

THE FACT OF SIN

Solomon could not get away from the fact that all men, at the end of the day, are only sinners.

“For there is not a just man on earth who does good
And does not sin.”
Ecclesiastes 7:20

1. A foolish man

a) Many were the problems and sorrows associated with the foolish man.

b) Solomon disdained the foolish person who casts away wisdom.

c) Often the foolish man ends up becoming a poor person.

2. A wise man

a) Solomon extolled the value of wisdom in Ecclesiastes.
b) He highlighted many virtues and blessings that arise from “wisdom”.
c) Wisdom would be useful to the person who has come into an inheritance.

3. A just man

a) If there is anything that is “better than” a wise man, it would be a “just man”.
b) His life would be markedly different and blessed.

4. Further observation

a) There were people who begin well in being just and doing good things.
b) But could they continue to sustain the life of a just man?

5. “For there is not a just man on earth who does good and does not sin”

a) Solomon could not find a consistently faithful just man.
b) His hope was to find a just man who does not sin.

This was an impossible and unrealistic expectation. The reality of sin was well noted by the Apostle Paul.

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”
Romans 3:23
