"Words of truth"

Text: Ecclesiastes 12:10

THE CHALLENGE OF A GOOD WRITER

Solomon took delight in being “the Preacher”. A good and skilled Preacher must be a wordsmith. It is not easy to be a creditable and respectable speaker.

“The Preacher sought to find acceptable words;
and what was written was upright-words of truth.”
Ecclesiastes 12:10

1. “The Preacher sought to find acceptable words”

a) Words

i) What kind of words must be found?

ii) Words never come easily.

iii) They need to be “found”.

b) Acceptable words

i) They must be acceptable to God, in the first place.

ii) It must also be acceptable to readers.

2. “And what was written was upright-words of truth”

a) The written word is even more challenging.

b) Once they are written, they were hard to change.

3. Solomon’s commitment was to ensure that two things must not be compromised

a) The words must be “upright”.

i) They are righteous words.

ii) They are honourable words.

iii) They are words that reflect integrity.

iv) They are wholesome words.

b) The words must be “of truth”.

i) The words are not equivocal.

ii) They are not ambiguous.

iii) They are clean and clear.

iv) The reflect the truth of God.
