"The labour of fools wearies him"

Text: Ecclesiastes 10:15

A LAST OBSERVATION ABOUT FOOLS

The last word in this observation about fools was made with some sarcasm. This may display how tired the writer must have felt as he went about studying about fools.

“The labour of fools wearies them,
For they do not even know how to go to the city!”
Ecclesiastes 10:15

1. “The labour of fools wearies them”

a) Labour

i) This is expected of all who work.

ii) Every citizen is expected to do his part for his country and his family.

b) But the fool finds that labour wearies him out.

i) Labour can make anyone “weary”.

ii) It is legitimate to feel weary after much energy has been spent working.

iii) But this kind of weariness is not what the fool feels.

2. “For they do not even know how to go to the city!”

a) This is where the sarcasm bites.

b) If a person goes to the city to work, the journey there should be mere routine.

c) In the case of fools, even traveling to the city becomes a problem.

d) They do not know how to go to their place of work in the city.

3. Possible explanations

a) Distractions along the way

i) The fool may be distracted along the way.

ii) He could stop and chat with friends until he goes to work late.

b) Losing his way

i) He may not be familiar with the city.

ii) He should familiarise himself with the surroundings of the city, but he does not.

iii) Thus, when he finally gets to the place of his work, he is already feeling weary

c) No motivation felt

i) When a person is well-motivated, he will find the strength to work.

ii) If a person does not understand his work nor even why he needs to work,
he is easily wearied out. He lacks the drive that comes from motivation.
