Day 6

"There is no remembrance of former things"

Text: Ecclesiastes 1:11

AN ADDED PROBLEM

The more the Preacher pondered life, the more distressed he became. This was another additional thought that stressed him further.

“There is no remembrance of former things,
Nor will there be any remembrance of things that are to come
By those who will come after.”
Ecclesiastes 1:11

1. “There is no remembrance of former things”

a) “Former things”
The Preacher may have borne in mind the following:
i) Good things
ii) Significant things
b) “No remembrance”
i) This does not mean no recollection.
ii) But that the full impact of good things is not fully understood or appreciated.

2. “Nor will there be any remembrance of things that are to come by those who will come after”

a) “No remembrance”
i) This problem was not only about the present generation.
ii) It was a problem that would persist with many people.
b) Future things
i) They would have similar characteristics (good and significant features).
ii) But these good things would also not be remembered appreciatively.
c) “By those who will come after”
i) The future generations would not become better naturally.
ii) They would follow in the ways of their predecessors.

3. Sad observations

a) This is a sad but true observation of life in general.
b) Few, if any, would appreciate what has been done.
c) Every generation faces the danger of forgetting past achievements easily.
d) Things are taken too much for granted!
e) People may end up with very short memories!
