"Above all these things put on love..."

Text: Colossians 3:14


The elect of God must consider the most significant feature yet. This was of such importance it was saved for the last.

“But above all these things put on love,
which is the bond of perfection.”

Colossians 3:14

1. “All these things”

a) These things were mentioned in Colossians 3:12-13.
b) All these things make up the clothing of the elect of God.

2. “Put on”

a) This phrase is not actually in the text.
b) It is drawn from Colossians 3:12.
c) The call to “put on” covers Colossians 3:12-14.

3. “Put on love”

a) We are reminded of the teachings of Jesus on this subject.
i) To love one another (John 13:34).
ii) This was an express commandment (John 13:34).
b) Paul extolled the virtue of love in 1 Corinthians 13.
i) He compares it to all other spiritual gifts.
ii) Love was the paramount gift.

4. “The bond”

a) The word “bond” is most apt.
b) Love is the bond of all the virtues.
c) Love is also the bond among the elect of God.

5. “Perfection”

a) This word suggests “fullness of maturity”. It does not mean sinlessness!
b) Maturity
i) Maturity of the believer.
ii) Maturity in the Christian community of the elect of God.
