"Let no one cheat you of your reward..."

Text: Colossians 2:18

THE DANGER OF FALSE TEACHINGS

Once again the apostle Paul had to highlight the danger of false teachings.

“Let no one cheat you of your reward,
taking delight in false humility and worship of angels,
intruding into those things which he has not seen,
vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind.”
Colossians 2:18

1. “Let no one cheat you of your reward”

a) The idea of “cheating” had to be highlighted.
b) The false teachers were cheating believers of their reward from the Lord.
i) Which comes from faith in Christ.
ii) Which comes from a dynamic relationship with Christ.
c) The keeping of religious rituals would end up cheating the believers from receiving their rewards from the Lord because of their faith in Him.

2. “Taking delight”

a) The false teachers wished their followers to follow them.
b) These were some of the things they were taught to delight in:-
i) Humility (of the false kind)
ii) The worship of angels
c) These were never taught by the Lord Jesus Christ!

THE SOURCE OF THESE ABERRANT BELIEFS AND PRACTICES

Paul traced the source of these religious teachings and practices! He had to expose these false teachers revealing some startling facts about them.

1. Their source of so-called knowledge did not come from God.

2. Their source was their own fleshly mind.

3. Their minds were “puffed up” by their imagination.

a) They imagined entering into spiritual spheres that they had not actually seen.
b) They spoke as if they had deep and true spiritual encounters with God.
c) They tried to impress their followers by every means they could.

4. Their influence had to be checked.

They had to be opposed or they would cause further damage to the church and individual believers.
