Hiding And Revealing

Text: Colossians 1:27

It is God’s Divine prerogative both to hide and to reveal deep spiritual truths. That which was hidden was called “mysteries”. Paul now wrote about how God revealed these mysteries to His saints.

“To them God willed to make known what are the riches
of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles:
which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.”
Colossians 1:27

1. “To them”

a) These have been identified as His “saints” (Colossians 1:2, 26).
b) They have been “made holy” through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
c) Other special terms to describe them:
i) “Faithful brethren” (Colossians 1:2)
ii) “Partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light” (Colossians 1:12)

2. “God willed”

a) It is God’s prerogative to will.
b) God willed that His saints would understand a special mystery that had been hidden for ages.

3. “The glory of this mystery”

a) This great mystery is full of glory.
b) It is well described as “the riches of (His) glory”.

4. A specific audience identified

a) This was part of the mystery.
b) The Gentiles would be included as recipients (and not just Israel).

5. The content of this mystery

a) It is summarised in this short text.
b) It is “Christ in you” (The Gentile saints).
c) An explanatory phrase was added, “The hope of glory”.
i) Christ is our Hope of glory!
ii) Christ is in us!
iii) This was such an awesome truth revealed!
iv) It is a truth that is sadly not fully fathomed and appreciated!
