The Position Of Christ

Text: Colossians 1:17

What is the position of Christ Jesus in the whole hierarchy of things in the world? Paul writes affirmatively.

“And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.”
Colossians 1:17

1. “He is before all things”

a) Jesus is presented as existing before all creation came into existence.
b) This hints at His eternal essence.

2. In full agreement with the writings of the apostle John

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God,
and the Word was God.

John bore witness of Him and cried out, saying,
‘This was He of whom I said,
“He who comes after me is preferred before me,
for He was before me.”‘”
John 1:1, 15

a) John presents Jesus as the Eternal Word.
b) Jesus was always with God.
c) This was because, in His essence, He was God (divinity).
d) He preserved and presented the testimony of John the Baptiser.
i) Jesus was before John (with reference to existence).
ii) He was before John in another sense (He ranked first).
iii) He who comes after me (this is with reference to the earthly ministry of Jesus).

3. “And in Him all things consist”

a) Jesus was more than Co-creator.
b) He literally holds things together.
c) He continues to play a significant role after all things were created.
i) He upholds.
ii) He protects.
iii) He provides.
iv) He holds all things by the power of His hands.
