Day 100

"And all the Gentiles who are called by My name"

Text: Amos 9:12

THE EXTENT OF THE MESSIANIC KINGDOM

The original kingdom of David was essentially confined to Israel. The following text however includes Gentiles! Thus, we must understand that the reference to the “tabernacle of David” was Messianic and spiritual.

“‘That they may possess the remnant of Edom,
And all the Gentiles who are called by My name,’
Says the LORD who does this thing.”
Amos 9:12

1. “That they may possess the remnant of Edom”

a) Edom is a reference to Esau’s descendants.
b) The prophecy of Obadiah pronounced the doom of Edom as a nation.
c) Nevertheless, the mercy of the Lord was given and there was a “remnant” left.
d) Edom as a nation would cease to exist but those who had Edomite roots may still be redeemed.
e) In the Messianic kingdom of the Messiah, Edomites may be saved!

2. “And all the Gentiles who are called by My name”

a) Gentiles were not a part of the original kingdom of David.
b) But in the Messianic kingdom Gentiles would be included.
c) Those who come to faith in the Lord Jesus Christ would be included in the Messianic kingdom.

3. “Says the LORD who does this thing”

a) It is the Lord God who has made this decree.
b) He would also be the One who would fulfil this prophetic word of promise.

FULFILMENT OF THE PROPHECY THAT GENTILES WOULD BE SAVED

There are many texts in the New Testament that bear testimony of the fulfilment of this prophecy. The following may be highlighted.

1. The Lord Jesus Christ speaks of “other sheep”

“And other sheep I have which are not of this fold;
them also I must bring, and they will hear My voice;
and there will be one flock and one shepherd.”
John 10:16

2. The Apostle Peter

“Then Peter opened his mouth and said:
‘In truth I perceive that God shows no partiality.
But in every nation whoever fears Him and works righteousness is accepted by Him.'”
Acts 10:34-35

3. The Apostle Paul

“For so the Lord has commanded us:
‘I have set you as a light to the Gentiles,
That you should be for salvation to the ends of the earth.’
Now when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and glorified the word of the Lord.
And as many as had been appointed to eternal life believed.”
Acts 13:47-48

The Messianic Kingdom was not confined to Israel physically. It extends to the ends of the earth!
