Day 86

"Israel shall surely be led away captive"

Text: Amos 7:17

THE JUDGMENT OF GOD

The prophetic ministry of Amos had been actively resented and resisted by Amaziah. Little did he realise the consequences and the judgment of God that would befall him and his family!

“Therefore thus says the LORD:
‘Your wife shall be a harlot in the city;
Your sons and daughters shall fall by the sword;
Your land shall be divided by survey line;
You shall die in a defiled land;
And Israel shall surely be led away captive
From his own land.”
Amos 7:17

1. “Therefore thus says the LORD”

a) Once again, a message came from the LORD.
b) The source of this word was to be found in the Lord.
c) Amos was only a spokesman!

2. A solemn judgment pronounced:

a) “Your wife shall be a harlot in the city”
i) Not by choice.
ii) But forced by circumstances in life (when Israel is overrun by a powerful enemy- Assyria).
b) “Your sons and daughters shall fall by the sword”
i) This was a grim and bitter judgment pronounced.
ii) All the children would be killed by the sword of the enemy.
c) “Your land shall be divided by survey line”
i) Amaziah may be called “a royal priest”.
ii) He served the royal family.
iii) He must have been given a significant piece of landed property.
iv) His land would be taken over and divided.
d) “You shall die in a defiled land”
i) This would be a dreadful way to die (where Jews were concerned).
ii) To die in a defiled land suggests that Amaziah would have been made a captive first.
e) “And Israel shall surely be led away captive from his own land”
i) Amaziah had resisted this prophetic message.
ii) The very thing he dreaded would take place in his lifetime and he would suffer all of the above!
