"The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon Me..."

Text: Isaiah 61:1a

THREE SIGNIFICANT TEXTS

We have three significant prophetic texts related to the ministry of the Holy Spirit with reference to the Messiah!

1. The first two texts

a) Isaiah 11:2; Isaiah 42:1
b) These foretold the anointing of the Messiah by the Holy Spirit.
c) They describe how the Spirit of God will affect the life and the ministry of the Messiah.

2. The third text

a) This was also a prophetic text.
b) But this is different from the previous texts.
c) This text describes the Messiah’s personal perspective of what it means to be anointed by the Holy Spirit.

A PERSONAL UNDERSTANDING

The Messiah’s personal understanding and response to the knowledge of how He would be anointed for life and ministry is noted here.

“The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon Me,
Because the LORD has anointed Me
To preach good tidings to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives,
And the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD,
And the day of vengeance of our God;
To comfort all who mourn,
To console those who mourn in Zion,
To give them beauty for ashes,
The oil of joy for mourning,
The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness;
That they may be called trees of righteousness,
The planting of the LORD that He may be glorified.”
Isaiah 61:1-3

1. “The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon Me”

a) There is acknowledgment of the ministry of the Spirit of God.
b) There is also appreciation of His involvement in life and ministry.

2. “Because the LORD has anointed Me”

a) The work of the Spirit of God is that of anointing.
b) The Messiah would be consecrated through anointing to do the work that God has given Him.
