Text: Hebrews 10:16

THE COVENANTS OF GOD

The Scriptures describe a number of covenants God established. These special entities are sometimes called “suzerainty covenants”. They are given out of Divine grace and mercy. The following are the covenants God gave. In chronological order: –

1. The Noahic covenant (Genesis 9:8-17)

2. The Abrahamic covenant (Genesis 15:1-18)

3. The Sinaitic covenant (Exodus 24:7; Deuteronomy 5:2-3)

4. The Levitical covenant (Malachi 2:4-5)

5. The Davidic covenant (Psalm 89:28)

THE BREAKING OF GOD’S COVENANT

Israel broke the covenant of God most severely. This was solemnly declared by Jeremiah the prophet. This was declared in the light of a new covenant that God promised to establish.

“‘Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD,
when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel
and with the house of Judah- not according to the covenant
that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them
by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant
which they broke, though I was a husband to them,’ says the LORD.”
Jeremiah 31:31-32

1. The covenant (in this context)

a) It is clear that this is a reference to the Sinaitic covenant.
b) The context is very specific.
i) There was the mention of God taking them out of Egypt.
ii) This covenant was broken by Israel and Judah.
c) No excuse for breaking the old covenant.
i) God had taken Israel out of Egypt with great power.
ii) God loved Israel as a husband loved his wife.
iii) But Israel was totally unfaithful and ungrateful.

2. The new covenant

a) This was promised.
b) It would replace the old covenant.
c) The Messiah-Servant would establish this new covenant.
