2 Timothy

Day 70

“But you must continue in the things which you have learned…”

Text: 2 Timothy 3:14

DEEP CONCERN

The Apostle Paul was of course deeply concerned that his beloved spiritual son should not end up being deceived! He knew all too well, just how cunning and deadly these wicked impostors were!

A DEFENCE AGAINST DECEPTION

How would Paul help Timothy to guard against the deception that had adversely affected so many? The following words are highly instructive!

“But you must continue in the things which you have learned
and been assured of, knowing from whom you have
learned them.”

2 Timothy 3:14

1. “But you”

a) “But”- This was a strong appeal.
b) “You”

Timothy must determine that he would not end up being deceived:-

i) Conscious effort must be made.
ii) Consistent effort must be put in.
c) This was something personal that Timothy was responsible for:-
i) Paul could not live for him.
ii) Timothy must make this effort personally.

2. “Continue”

a) This may be understood as an imperative.
b) The root idea must be noted:-
i) The word “continue” simply means “to remain” or “to abide”.
ii) This word was used by the Lord Jesus Christ Himself.
c) Three challenges given by the Lord Jesus
i) To remain in Christ Jesus.
ii) To remain in His word.
iii) To remain in His love.

The word “abide” is particularly prominent in John 15.

d) The translated word “continue”

This is a good translation! When one has grown to love the Lord and abide in His love, the heart desires to deepen its knowledge of God!
