"Many will follow their destructive ways"

Text: 2 Peter 2:2

FOLLOWERS OF FALSE TEACHERS

One would imagine that people would flee from false teachers. But in reality, this is not the case.

“And many will follow their destructive ways,
because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed.”
2 Peter 2:2

1. “And many will follow their destructive ways”

a) “Many”

i) This is a sobering word.

ii) The effectiveness of the false teachers cannot be ignored or denied.

b) Following

i) The disciples followed the Lord Jesus.

ii) A slightly different word was used but the idea is the same.
The false teachers had people following after them.

c) “Destructive ways”

i) The NKJV translators opted to repeat the same word used in 2 Peter 2:1.

ii) The ways of the false teachers were indeed destructive.

iii) The nuance in 2 Peter 2:2 was one of “licentiousness” (immorality).

iv) The ways of these false teachers would lead to debauchery.

d) The way of life that Peter had emphasised:

i) Holiness 1 Peter 1:15-16

ii) Righteousness 1 Peter 2:11-12

The “destructive heresies” stood in stark contrast to all that Peter had taught and stood for!

2. “Because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed”

a) These false teachers had infiltrated the church community.

b) Those who were non-believers would not be able to comprehend fully.

c) They would bring disrepute to the name of the Lord and the Church.

d) The consequences:

i) The way of truth would be blasphemed.

ii) Those on the outside would speak against the Lord and the church.

iii) They would not be able to know that these were false teachers amidst the church community.

iv) Blasphemy against the Lord and the church would result.
