"Preserved by the same word"

Text: 2 Peter 3:7

DEFENDING THE AUTHORITY OF GOD’S WORD

Peter knew that the false teachers sought to undermine the authority of the word of God. He stoutly defended the strength and power of God’s word.

“But the heavens and the earth
which are now preserved by the same word,
are reserved for fire
until the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.”
2 Peter 3:7

1. “But the heavens and the earth which are now preserved by the same word”

a) It was by the word spoken by God that the heavens and earth were created.

b) The heavens and the earth are actually preserved by God’s word.

2. The doctrine of the word of God (a short summary)

a) There is power in God’s word.

b) That power is in the teachings of both

i) The prophets; and

ii) The apostles.

c) The word in question:

That the Lord Jesus is coming again.

d) This word was challenged by the false teachers.

i) They disputed the validity of God’s word.

ii) They discounted the power of His word.

iii) They rejected the idea of the Second Coming of Christ essentially.

e) Peter defended the word of God.

i) God’s word had power to create.

ii) His word had power to destroy.

iii) The promise of Christ’s return will take place. Simply because it is the word of God.

3. “Are reserved for fire until the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men”

a) One day, there will be a day of judgment.

b) It would mean “perdition” for the ungodly.

c) The word “reserved”:

i) God is storing everything.

ii) All are being kept by the power of God’s word.

d) The symbol that was used to describe God’s judgment is “fire”.

It is God’s word of power that would see this prophetic word come to pass!
Peter held fast to his faith in the word of God.
