"God, who comforts the downcast…"

Text: 2 Corinthians 7:6

HOW GOD GIVES COMFORT

There are many ways in which God can give comfort. He can give inspiration through His Word. He can create hope within the heart. He could also send comfort through people.

“Nevertheless God, who comforts the downcast,
comforted us by the coming of Titus.”
2 Corinthians 7:6

1. “Nevertheless God”

a) Paul pointed to God as the Giver of comfort.
b) This is consistent with what he wrote about the Lord being the God of all comfort (2 Corinthians 1:3-7).

2. “Who comforts the downcast”

a) The word “downcast”
i) It describes a person who has been brought down by circumstances.
ii) It also describes a person who is humble.
iii) Paul maintained this spirit of humility as he struggled with tough external circumstances.
iv) It was not easy to be reviled by wicked people.
b) God’s comfort
i) His presence certainly helped.
ii) His promises that He would be there with us in all of life’s trials.
iii) Comfort was found in the Lord.

3. “Comforted us by the coming of Titus”

a) Comfort may also come in the form of a human being.
b) Titus came to Macedonia to be with Paul.
c) His presence brought much comfort to Paul and his companions.
d) Some reasons:
i) Human needs are often best met through human means.
ii) Titus was a beloved spiritual son to Paul.
iii) He was a faithful servant of the Lord.
iv) That he would take the time to visit Paul brought a special lift to the heart.
v) Titus risked being persecuted if he were to be seen in the company of Paul, but he was not ashamed to be associated with his spiritual father and mentor.
vi) The special bond of friendship and love between them brought much comfort to the heart.

Special friends bring special comfort!
