"That we might become the righteousness of God..."

Text: 2 Corinthians 5:21

THE CENTRALITY OF CHRIST

Paul’s message of the gospel centred in the person of the Lord Jesus Christ! This was an eternal message that he held fast to all his life.

“For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us,
that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”
2 Corinthians 5:21

1. The Gospel of Christ appreciated afresh

a) God’s role is to be acknowledged.
b) God has to send the Lord Jesus to fulfil His plan for the salvation of mankind.

2. “He made Him”

a) The pronoun “He” is a reference to God.
b) The second pronoun “Him” is a reference to the Lord Jesus Christ.

3. “Who knew no sin”

a) Jesus was born sinless.
b) He remained sin-free throughout His life and ministry.
c) This is remarkable for there were so many temptations!

4. “To be sin for us”

a) Jesus was the Lamb of God (John 1:29).
b) He came to bear the guilt and penalty of our sins.

5. “That we might become”

a) The children of God (John 1:12)
b) The brethren of Christ (Hebrews 2:10-13)
c) We are members of His household (Ephesians 2:19-22).

6. “That we might become the righteousness of God”

a) God’s righteousness is imputed to us (Romans 5:1).
b) We stand as people of righteousness.
c) We are justified by faith in Christ (Romans 5:1).

7. “In Him”

a) This is a reference to the Lord Jesus Christ.
b) We owe all that we have and all that we are to Christ Jesus.
c) Only in Christ do we have any standing before our holy and righteous God.
