"We can do nothing against the truth..."

Text: 2 Corinthians 13:8

THE MATTER OF TRUTH

Paul was committed to preaching the truth of the Gospel of God. He was also committed to wearing the belt of truth as he waged spiritual warfare. Truth should not just be believed in but practised consciously.

“For we can do nothing against the truth,
but for the truth.”
2 Corinthians 13:8

1. “Truth”

a) It begins with the Lord Jesus Christ as the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6).
b) Jesus was committed to proclaiming the truth of God’s word (John 8:40).
c) Truth will make a person truly free from the power of sin (John 8:32).

2. The apostles of Christ

a) All were committed to proclaiming the same gospel of truth.
b) All sought to live according to the truth they preached.
c) This was a basic commitment of all true servants of God.

3. “For we can do nothing against the truth”

a) What was the truth concerning Paul and his fellow workers?
i) They had proven themselves as faithful and true servants of God.
ii) The fruits of their life and labour testify to the Lord’s blessing.
iii) Paul had founded the church at Corinth.
iv) He had taught the Lord’s word faithfully.
b) Nothing can be done against such obvious truths.
i) Allegations against Paul would not take away the truth of Paul’s actions.
ii) Accusations against Paul would not be able to disprove what he had accomplished.

4. A worthy axiom

a) Nothing can be done against the truth.
i) No falsehood.
ii) No fabrication can stand against truth.
b) But for the truth
i) Truth ought to be proclaimed.
ii) Truth ought to be promoted.
iii) Truth must prevail at all times.

Such must be our commitment to the truth found in the Lord and His word!
