Day 148

"He who glories, let him glory in the LORD."

Text: 2 Corinthians 10:17

GLORYING IN THE LORD

Paul took time to explain the matter of “glorying” (boasting). He was aware of his detractors and how they boasted about their “accomplishments”.

“But ‘he who glories, let him glory in the LORD.’
For not he who commends himself is approved,
but whom the Lord commends.”
2 Corinthians 10:17-18

1. “But ‘he who glories, let him glory in the LORD'”

a) Paul had Jeremiah 9:23-24 in mind.
b) Jeremiah had this word from the LORD.
i) Let not the mighty man glory in his might.
ii) Nor let the rich man glory in his riches.
iii) “But let him who glories glory in this,
That he understands and knows Me,
That I am the LORD, exercising lovingkindness,
judgment, and righteousness in the earth.
For in these thing I delight.”
c) Paul certainly knew the Lord.
d) He gloried in his knowledge and understanding of the Lord.

2. “For not he who commends himself is approved”

a) Paul was making a remark about his detractors.
b) They commended themselves.
c) They gloried in the things that others accomplished.
d) They did not have much to speak of when it comes to the matter of their own works.
e) Self-praise is hardly true praise.
f) Self-approval amounts to nothing much at all.
g) Commendation
i) It is proven in real life.
ii) It may be documented.
iii) The works of the individual are examined and then commended by the Lord.

3. “But whom the Lord commends”

a) The Lord’s commendation of Paul was obvious (the same could not be said of his detractors).
b) There were accompanying signs, wonders and power of the Holy Spirit (Romans 15:19).
c) Paul’s work was evidenced consistently in the founding of many churches!
