"Who comforts us in all our tribulation..."

Text: 2 Corinthians 1:4

GOD AS OUR COMFORTER

The need for a comforter is obvious. Children seek comfort from their parents. Friends seek comfort in their special circle of friends. How wonderful it is to know that God will come alongside to comfort us.

“Who comforts us in all our tribulation,
that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble,
with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.”
2 Corinthians 1:4

1. “Tribulation… Trouble”

a) The NKJV text uses two different words.
b) This is often done by translators who feel that a different word might be less monotonous.
c) But in the Greek text, the same word was used (tribulation and trouble translate the same word).

2. “Who comforts us”

a) This is firstly a reference to The Comforter (God Himself).
b) It also describes the special work He does in giving comfort.
c) Thus, even when we face tribulation, we need not despair.
d) It is wonderful to know that God is right there beside us.
e) His very Presence would bring comfort enough.

3. “That we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble”

a) The comfort we have experienced with God is wonderful.
b) But it was not meant to be selfishly kept for ourselves.
c) The comfort we have from God ought to be shared with others.
d) There are many people who need to know the comfort God gives.
e) Those of us who have found God’s comfort must seek to share our faith with others.

4. “With the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God”

a) What have we experienced as the comfort of God?
i) Assurance that God is with us?
ii) Hope for the future?
iii) Strength for the challenges of life?
iv) Peace within our hearts?
b) These are wonderful truths that must be shared with others.
c) Let us seek to grow stronger in our faith in this great and wonderful God our Comforter so that many hearts may be encouraged to find hope and eternal life in Him.
