"You also helping together in prayer..."

Text: 2 Corinthians 1:11

PRAYING FOR PEOPLE

We are asked for prayer support at times. Does praying for people really help?

“You also helping together in prayer for us,
that thanks may be given by many persons
on our behalf for the gift granted to us through many.”
2 Corinthians 1:11

1. “You also helping together”

a) We have an interesting word in the Greek text.

b) This compound word is translated “helping together”.

c) The features that may be highlighted:

i) People coming together.
ii) They are like a group of people bearing up a heavy burden.
iii) They are working together to bear this challenging burden.

2. “In prayer for us”

a) These are the “prayer-partners” of Paul and his fellow-labourers.
b) They were seeking to share his burdens.
c) They were doing this in prayer.

3. “That thanks may be given by many persons on our behalf”

a) Paul had many people who prayed alongside.
b) Each answer to prayer would see these prayer partners give thanks to God as a response.
c) This is good and appropriate.
d) It is something that those who have learned to pray would practice.

4. “For the gift granted to us through many”

a) The word “gift” comes from the word “grace”.
b) Each gift may be described as a “grace-gift”.
c) The following things may be classified under “grace-gift”.
i) Comfort from God the Father.
ii) Strength to bear the burdens of life.
iii) Divine intervention in some instances.
iv) The grace of God extended in life and ministry.
v) Every prayer offered and answered.
