"Do not neglect the gift that is in you..."

Text: 1 Timothy 4:14

SPIRITUAL GIFTS

To every believer God has given at least one spiritual gift. It is possible that some have been entrusted with several spiritual gifts. This truth was taught in Ephesians 4:7-8. The Scriptures provide a glimpse of some of the gifts in the following texts:

1. Romans 12:6-8

2. 1 Corinthians 12:4-11

3. Ephesians 4:11

The gifts of the Lord are listed as responsible servants of God, fulfilling their tasks in establishing the church.

THE CULTIVATION OF SPIRITUAL GIFTS

God is responsible for the giving of spiritual gifts. But the believer is responsible for cultivating the gifts entrusted.

“Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you
by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the eldership.”

1 Timothy 4:14

1. “Do not neglect the gift”

a) The word “gift” may be a collective reference.
b) It is not limited to a single gift.

2. “That is in you”

a) This is to be discovered.
b) It is then to be developed.
c) There must be no neglect.
i) Prayer must be made.
ii) Practice of this gift must be consistent.

3. “Which was given to you by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the eldership”

a) This is a historical reference.
b) The eldership is a reference to the leaders of the church.
c) We may call this “the ordaining council”.
d) This is most likely a reference to the time when Timothy was ordained for the ministry.
e) Where and when this took place we are not certain.

THE SPIRITUAL GIFTS OF GOD

These must be greatly treasured. They must be humbly used for the blessing of the church. These gifts represent the Lord’s blessing and approval of His servants for their ministry.
