Day 5

"From God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord."

Text: 1 Timothy 1:2

THE SOURCE OF ALL BLESSINGS

The apostle Paul was very careful to identify the source of these wonderful blessings of life. The source is important to note!

“Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father and
Jesus Christ our Lord.”
1 Timothy 1:2

1. “God our Father”

a) This is a well-known truth.
b) On the maternal side of Timothy.
i) Both grandmother and mother were Jewish.
ii) To identify God as the Source of these blessings would be immediately understood.
c) Paul was very careful to declare his faith in God as Father.
i) As God He is able to extend these blessings.
ii) As Father He affectionately bestows these blessings to his beloved children.

2. “And Jesus Christ our Lord”

a) This was the “new” element.
b) The Source is also traced to Jesus.
i) He is described as “Christ” (The Anointed One of God).
ii) He is also described as Lord (and thus He has the authority and power to bestow these blessings).

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF ESTABLISHING THE SOURCE

Is there great significance in identifying both the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ as the Source of these blessings? Let us ponder two vital thoughts:-

1. Equality between Father and Son

a) Many had difficulties in accepting Jesus as coequal with God.
b) This was a foundational Christian truth that needed to be established in the first century.
c) Paul was deeply committed to establishing basic Christian tenets of faith.

2. Similar Roots

a) Judaism and Christianity shared the same spiritual roots.
b) The former represented the old covenant while the latter represented the new covenant.
c) Together they form a perfect whole.
