"From which some, having strayed..."

Text: 1 Timothy 1:6

WHEN THE FOCUS IS NOT THE WORD OF GOD

What will happen when the focus is not on the word of God? The apostle Paul offered this observation.

“From which some, having strayed, have turned aside to idle talk.”

1 Timothy 1:6

1. When the Word of God is central

a) Love is the result.
b) It is well-supported by:-
i) A pure heart
ii) A good conscience
iii) Sincere faith

2. When people lose their focus

a) They will go astray.
i) They will depart from God’s ways.
ii) They will walk in paths that are contrary to God’s clear word.
b) They will turn aside to idle talk
i) Fables
ii) Endless genealogies

AN OLD PROBLEM

This problem is not a new one. The problem of false teachings was combatted by many of the apostles in their epistles. No church was freed from the attacks of false teachers. Apart from the apostle Paul, the following apostles also dealt with false teachers.

1. The apostle Peter warned in 2 Peter 2:1 of:-

a) False prophets
b) False teachers

2. The apostle John warned of:-

a) Liars who deny Christ (1 John 2:22).
b) He speaks of them as “antichrists” (1 John 2:18).

SAFEGUARDS

Let us determine to put in important safe-guards in our life. Let us determine that we will always have the Word of God as the main focus of our life. Let us also ensure that love will be the fruit that the Holy Spirit generates within our hearts!
