Text: 1 Thessalonians 4:10

COMMENDATION OF THE PRACTICE OF LOVE

The apostle Paul commended the Thessalonians for their practice of brotherly love. He went on to encourage them to increase this love they had in their heart.

“And indeed you do so toward all the brethren who
are in all Macedonia. But we urge you, brethren,
that you increase more and more.”

1 Thessalonians 4:10

1. “And indeed you do so”

a) The brotherly love exhibited by the Thessalonians was firstly noted.
b) It was then commended.

2. “Toward all the brethren who are in all Macedonia”

a) The Thessalonians showed their love for others.
b) They extended this love for the brethren in the region of Macedonia.
i) Within the context of the church.
ii) Beyond their shores to other places in Macedonia.

3. “But we urge you, brethren, that you increase more and more”

a) This was a strong appeal to the Thessalonians.
b) The appeal was to explore how they could increase their capacity of love.

INCREASING THE CAPACITY TO LOVE

How may we actually increase our capacity to love more and more!

1. It begins with examining our present capacity to love.

a) Initial capacity is usually not very much.
b) With continued growth in knowledge and faith this love can deepen much more.

2. It is to be prayed for.

a) Paul would often pray for believers to deepen their love (Philippians 1:9)
b) Love is a fruit of the Spirit of God.
i) The Spirit of God Himself must do this work.
ii) He always seeks to deepen our spiritual life.

3. It is to be recognized as the hallmark of believers.

a) It is called the “bond of perfection” (Colossians 3:14).
b) It is to be carefully exercised in our walk with the Lord (Ephesians 5:2).
