"Bold in our God..."

Text: 1 Thessalonians 2:2

RECOLLECTION

We have a glimpse of how the apostle Paul must have reviewed his ministry in various places in the following text.

“For you yourselves know, brethren, that our coming to you
was not in vain. But even after we had suffered before and
were spitefully treated at Philippi, as you know, we were bold
in our God to speak to you the gospel of God in much conflict.”

1 Thessalonians 2:1-2

1. Ministry in Thessalonica

a) Paul reviewed his time at both Philippi and Thessalonica.
b) The ministry in Thessalonica was not in vain.

2. Ministry in Philippi

a) Suffered much
i) Paul and Silas were beaten with rods (Acts 16:22).
ii) Many stripes were laid on them (Acts 16:23).
iii) Jailed with feet fastened in the stocks (Acts 16:24).
b) Spitefully treated
i) Paul and Silas were Romans and were entitled to a fair trial.
ii) They were treated spitefully and shamefully.
iii) They must have been seriously injured by the beating they received.

3. “Much conflict”

a) Paul had suffered much for the sake of the Lord.
b) He had to endure much pain and suffering.
c) Paul learned early that suffering was part and parcel of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

4. “We were bold in our God”

a) Suffering did not deter Paul and his team in any way.
b) These faithful servants of God continue to display boldness.
c) They continued to proclaim the gospel of Christ freely.
d) They were well aware of the danger they were in.
e) But nothing fazed them from fulfilling their ministry of preaching the gospel of God.
