"The Chief Shepherd"

Text: 1 Peter 5:4

THE PREEMINENCE OF CHRIST

The Lord Jesus Christ was always on the mind of the Apostle Peter. In every single chapter, Peter mentioned the Lord Jesus. He is mentioned again as the Chief Shepherd.

“And when the Chief Shepherd appears,
you will receive the crown of glory that does not fade away.”
1 Peter 5:4

1. “The Chief Shepherd”

a) The Lord Jesus was indeed the Good Shepherd (John 10).
b) He is also correctly described as the “Chief Shepherd”.

2. “When the Chief Shepherd appears”

a) This is a reference to the Second Coming of Christ.
b) The word “appears” suggests:
i) A special manifestation.
ii) This manifestation would be done in the open.
iii) It would be like light shining in the darkness.
iv) It would be a glorious day indeed!

3. “You will receive the crown of glory that does not fade away”

a) The under-shepherd is in focus here.
b) He has been given the responsibility for caring for the flock of God.
c) He has proven himself to be faithful and true in the discharge of his duties.
d) He will be honoured by the Lord, the Chief Shepherd.
i) He will be given the crown of glory.
ii) This crown has an unfading quality.
e) These words were written to encourage and exhort the elders of the church.
The task of shepherding the flock of God was a truly challenging one!
