"Giving honour to the wife"

Text: 1 Peter 3:7

A WORD TO THE HUSBANDS

The Apostle Peter also felt that he had to give a word to the husbands. They too could do with a word of encouragement.

“Husbands, likewise, dwell with them with understanding,
giving honour to the wife, as to the weaker vessel,
and as being heirs together of the grace of life,
that your prayers may not be hindered.”
1 Peter 3:7

1. “Husbands, likewise, dwell with them with understanding”

a) This would be a reference to believing husbands.
b) The context would confirm this.
c) They are to live with their wives with understanding.
i) The word “understanding” begins with “knowledge”.
ii) Husbands were urged to know and understand their wives better.

2. “Giving honour to the wife, as to the weaker vessel”

a) The word “honour” is in the NKJV text.
i) It is right to give honour to the wife.
ii) Especially if they have proven themselves to be “daughters of Sarah”.
b) The weaker sex
i) Physically, men are stronger.
ii) The idea of a “weaker sex” was a common understanding then.
iii) The womenfolk were not to be despised in any way, at any time.
iv) The despising of women had to be addressed strongly.

3. “And as being heirs together of the grace of life”

a) Husbands were to recognise that their believing wives were “heirs together”.
i) The blessings of God to every believer extends to both male and female.
ii) Men are not greater heirs!
iii) Women are true and equal heirs of God.
b) “The grace of life”
i) Grace from God leads to eternal life.
ii) The grace of life was given to both men and women.
