"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ"

Text: 1 Peter 1:3

THE BLESSING OF GOD’S NAME

The blessing of God was typical among the Jews. It was almost customary among them to bless the Lord’s name when He is mentioned (Cf. Psalm 103:1-2). Peter was the leading apostle with a significant ministry among the Jews. That he would bless the Lord’s name was typical and expected.

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope
through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.”

1 Peter 1:3

1. “Blessed be”

a) This is another way of saying “Praise be”.
b) The Lord’s name mentioned this way reflected the following:
i) A high regard for God.
ii) Reverence towards God’s name.
iii) Giving great honour and praise to Him.

2. “The God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ”

a) This is reflective of what Peter observed about how Jesus related to His Father.
b) Jesus always regarded God as “Father” (John 5, 6, 8, etc.).
c) Jesus taught His Disciples how to relate to God as Father too:
i) In Prayer (Matthew 6:9-13)
ii) In relationship (John 20:17)
d) The thought of being able to relate to God in this special way was:
i) A special teaching from the Lord Jesus Christ.
ii) It was a New Testament doctrinal emphasis.
e) Peter revelled in this teaching.
i) He had found a new and wonderful relationship to God.
ii) God was not just a formal Greater Being.
iii) He was Father to the Lord Jesus Christ.
iv) He was Father to him.
v) He is Father to all truly born-again.
f) This was more than just a formal declaration.
i) It was written in appreciation.
ii) It was written in joy and praise.
iii) Understanding that God is our Father must cause us to bless His name.
