"Through the word of God"

Text: 1 Peter 1:23

BORN AGAIN

It was the Lord Jesus Christ Himself who taught this doctrine of being “born again”. This teaching was given personally to a famous teacher in Israel called Nicodemus (John 3). Jesus sought to help Nicodemus to understand that “being born again” must have the following features:

1. The Holy Spirit will cause this regeneration to take place.

2. The effects of being born again will have very real-life effects.

THE PLACE OF GOD’S WORD

Peter understood that doctrine of Jesus. He himself was born again. Peter sought to teach his readers the place of God’s word in the act of being born again.

“Having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible,
through the word of God which lives and abides forever.”
1 Peter 1:23

1. “Having been born again”

a) This was obviously not a new teaching to his readers.
b) They had learned this lesson from personal experience.
c) All Peter needed to do was to remind them of their understanding of being born again.

2. “Not of corruptible seed but incorruptible”

a) What is corruptible seed?
i) This would be a reference to our earthly origin.
ii) This is a reference to our first birth.
iii) The seed that we came from is “corruptible”.
iv) It will die one day.
b) What is incorruptible seed?
i) This is a reference to the second birth.
ii) Its origin is from the Spirit of God.
iii) This is an incorruptible seed.
iv) Eternal life is the inheritance of all who are truly born again.

3. “Through the word of God which lives and abides forever”

a) The “word of God”
i) This refers to the Scriptures.
ii) This covers the teachings of the Lord Jesus as well.
b) The nature of the word of God
i) It is living (alive).
ii) It abides and remains.
c) The word of God spoken by the Lord Jesus
i) That word would cause one to be born again.
ii) That word breathes life.
iii) The glorious nature of the word of God is that it will always abide forever.
