"That we may know Him who is true..."

Text: 1 John 5:20

THAT WE MAY TRULY KNOW GOD

As the Apostle John concluded his epistle he reflected on God’s purpose in sending His Son to the earth.

“And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us an understanding,
that we may know Him who is true;
and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ.
This is the true God and eternal life.”
1 John 5:20

1. “And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us an understanding”

a) Knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ was acquired by John over the years.
b) He now writes with a great depth of understanding and appreciation.
c) Jesus had come to give us an understanding of God.

2. “That we may know Him who is true”

a) No one has seen God at any time (John 1:18).
b) Jesus had declared who God is and what He is truly like (John 1:18).
c) We may now be fully assured that God is indeed true.

3. “In His Son Jesus Christ”

a) God may be known in and through the Lord Jesus Christ.
b) He, being the only begotten Son of God, could fully declare God perfectly.
i) He had come in the flesh.
ii) He had come to destroy the works of the devil.
iii) He had been manifested to reveal to us the Lord God Himself.
iv) He came to give us full understanding of what it means to have faith in God.

4. “This is the true God”

a) John affirms his faith in God.
b) He acknowledges Him as “the true God”.
c) Through knowledge of Jesus we may know “the true God”.

5. “And eternal life”

a) Through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ we become children of God (John 1:12).
b) Through faith in the Lord Jesus we obtain eternal life.
c) This is a gift of God that we must never take for granted.
