"All unrighteousness is sin..."

Text: 1 John 5:17

A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SIN

The Apostle John has written much on this topic called sin. It would be worthwhile to review what he has taught on this topic in 1 John.

1. What we should not do: –

a) We cannot say we have no sin (1 John 1:8).
b) We also cannot say we have not sinned (1 John 1:10).

2. What we should do with our sins: –

a) Confess our sins (1 John 1:9).
b) Be cleansed from our sins through forgiveness (1 John 1:9).

3. What we should be grateful for: –

a) That Jesus is the propitiation for our sins (1 John 2:2).
b) He is our Advocate with the Father (1 John 2:1).
c) That Jesus came to take away our sins (1 John 3:5).

4. What we should determine to do with reference to sin: –

a) Determine that we should not abide in sin (1 John 3:9).
b) Pray for those who commit sin that do not lead to death (1 John 5:16).

NOT ALL SINS LEAD TO DEATH

Thank God for His word that enlightens our heart and mind. Thank God for this illuminating text.

“All unrighteousness is sin, and there is sin not leading to death.”
1 John 5:17

1. “All unrighteousness is sin”

a) This is an obvious truth.
b) Anything that is unrighteous is obviously related to sin.

2. “And there is sin not leading to death”

a) Thank God for this glorious truth.
b) The Apostle Paul is an example of one who had been forgiven of many sins.

3. What is that sin that leads to death?

a) When we refuse to confess and seek forgiveness.
b) When we reject the Lord Jesus Christ as our Propitiation and our Advocate.
Then there is no one who can help us when we are judged by the Lord!
