"Who is he who overcomes the world..."
Text: 1 John 5:5
HEROES OF THE FAITH
When we think of heroes of the faith, who comes to mind? Everyone has his hero. The following are favourite Bible heroes:-
1. Moses
2. Joshua
3. David
4. Daniel
5. Paul
THE ORDINARY BELIEVER
The Apostle John wanted his readers to know that the “ordinary believer” can be an overcomer. Every born-again child of God can be an overcomer!
“Who is he who overcomes the world,
but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?”
1 John 5:5
1. “Who is he who overcomes the world?”
a) This is a natural question.
b) Who may be an overcomer?
2. “But he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God”
a) What a challenging thought this is!
b) The ordinary person who believes in the Lord Jesus as the Son of God can be an overcomer.
c) Victory is not limited to some special heroes mentioned in the Scriptures.
3. How is this possible?
a) Faith is the means.
i) Faith in the Lord Jesus as Saviour.
ii) Faith in the Lord Jesus as the Son of God.
b) Faith in God yields its own reward.
i) God is pleased with this faith of the believer.
ii) The believer is an ordinary person but he has an extraordinary God.
iii) This great God will enable and empower the ordinary believer to become an overcomer.
c) We are greatly challenged to cultivate and employ our faith.
