"No one has seen God at any time..."

Text: 1 John 4:12

SEEING GOD

The Apostle John was right in saying that no one has ever seen God. He has been most consistent in saying this.

“No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another,
God abides in us, and His love has been perfected in us.”
1 John 4:12

1. “No one has seen God at any time”

a) This was first stated in John 1:18.
b) John makes the same declaration in this text.

2. Two different applications

a) Application of John 1:18 “No one has seen God at any time”.
b) John went on to say that Jesus came to declare God.
i) To teach people about the Being of God.
ii) To demonstrate in His own life, the Character of God as only He can.
c) Application of 1 John 4:12
i) The focus here is on the love of God.
ii) Seeing God is knowing His love.

3. “If we love one another, God abides in us”

a) The case is quite straightforward.
b) If we have truly “seen” God.
i) We would have seen just how much He loves us.
ii) This in turn will cause us to love one another.
c) It may then be said that God abides in us.
i) God resides in our hearts filling us with His love.
ii) He makes His residence in our hearts.
iii) We will find that we are able to love one another.

4. “And His love has been perfected in us”

a) The word “perfected” means “fully matured”.
b) God’s love is so fully formed and matured in us we find this love extending to others even though our measure of love is not exactly the same as that of the Lord’s!
