"I write to you..."

Text: 1 John 2:13

A POSSIBLE SOLUTION

What was behind John Langton’s mind as he attempted to divide the New Testament in “chapter and verse”, especially with reference to 1 John 2:13c.

“I write to you, little children,
Because you have known the Father.”
1 John 2:13c

1. With deference to John Langton

a) He could have classified this verse as part of 1 John 2:13 for linguistic reasons.
b) In 1 John 2:12-13 the Present Tense was used throughout.
c) However in 1 John 2:14 the tense employed was an Aorist Tense (similar to the English Past Tense).

2. The Significance of having this text as part of 1 John 2:12-13

a) John writes consciously using the Present Tense.
i) Emphasis of caring for children is unmistakable.
ii) He expresses continuing concern for the ministry to children.
b) Two aspects of knowledge highlighted.
i) With reference to the forgiveness of sins.
ii) With reference to knowledge of God the Father.

3. Developing a strong understanding of God as Father

a) John of course was introduced to the Doctrine of God as Father by the Lord Jesus Christ Himself.
i) Through His own life’s example.
ii) Through direct teaching.
iii) Through constant emphasis (Gospel of John).
b) Children can relate to God as Father
i) More easily.
ii) More readily.
iii) Most correctly.
iv) With tremendous personal and practical impact.
v) John’s reference to knowledge of God as Father serves to underscore the importance of this essential teaching.
