"But whoever keeps His word..."

Text: 1 John 2:5

THE KEEPING OF GOD’S WORD

There is no mistaking John’s focus. The keeping of God’s word is the emphasis in this passage.

“But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him.
By this we know that we are in Him.”
1 John 2:5

1. “But whoever keeps His word”

a) Once again John emphasises the keeping of God’s word.
b) Mere claims of knowledge of God’s word proves nothing.

2. “Truly the love of God is perfected in him”

a) “Truly” was written adverbially.
b) The love of God may be understood in two ways:-
i) The love that God has for us (objectively).
ii) The love that we have for God (subjectively).
c) God’s love is poured into our hearts freely.
d) It should be obvious that we ought to love God in response.

3. “Perfected in him”

a) The word “perfected” was carefully chosen.
b) This word speaks of something that has developed and matured.
i) It begins with awareness of God’s love.
ii) It develops into a deep appreciation of His love.
iii) It matures significantly into a maturity of comprehension.
iv) It expresses itself in a fullness or perfection of love.

4. “By this we know that we are in Him”

a) “By this”
i) John used this phrase in 1 John 2:3.
ii) Once again he employs this phrase.
iii) In this reality we know for a fact that we are truly in the Lord.
b) “We know that we are in Him

This was John’s way of assessing a true relationship with God.

Knowledge must reflect a true relationship with God.

But this knowledge is proven only when we keep His commandments!
