"And He Himself is the propitiation..."

Text: 1 John 2:2

MORE THAN AN ADVOCATE

The role of the Lord Jesus Christ as our Advocate is truly heart-warming! That He would come alongside and be that Divine Helper is deeply moving. But there was another glorious role that Jesus had to play.

“And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins,
and not for ours only but also for the whole world.”
1 John 2:2

HE HIMSELF IS OUR PROPITIATION

This text is one of the most important verses in the whole Bible! It is important that we take time to digest what the Apostle John is seeking to communicate!

1. “He Himself”

a) This is a reference to the Lord Jesus Christ.
b) Only He can fulfil this role of offering propitiation.

2. “Propitiation for our sins”

a) Our sins
i) This cannot be denied.
ii) We cannot make light of our sins.
b) Consequences of our sins
i) We are adjudged guilty.
ii) We deserve God’s wrathful judgment.
iii) We are alienated from Him.
iv) We are dead in our sins!
c) Propitiation
i) When Jesus died for our sins He appeased God’s wrath.
ii) The full punishment for sin is death.
iii) Jesus died on behalf of us.
iv) God’s wrath is no more.
v) Jesus had to sacrifice Himself that we might have full forgiveness of our sins!

3. “And not for ours only but also for the whole world”

a) Christ’s death is effective for all who believe in Him.
b) His death is sufficient for the sins of the world.
