"We have seen, and bear witness..."

Text: 1 John 1:2

YOU SHALL BEAR WITNESS TO ME

It was the Lord Jesus who instructed His disciples to bear witness for Him (Acts 1:8). A small group of people had been specially chosen to be the disciples of the Lord Jesus. For three years, this faithful band of disciples had the privilege of doing the following:-

1. To hear Jesus speak and teach.

2. To see Him perform mighty miracles.

3. To handle or touch Him because they were in constant close contact.

Jesus knew that one day His disciples, and especially the apostles, would have to bear witness for Him. John and other faithful apostles and disciples faithfully bore witness for the Lord Jesus Christ. We have a good example here.

“The life was manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness,
and declare to you that eternal life which was with the Father
and was manifested to us-”
1 John 1:2

BEARING WITNESS

1. “We have seen, and bear witness”

a) John was writing as an eyewitness of the Person of the Lord Jesus Christ.
b) He could not deny what he had seen, but to faithfully bear witness of what he and others had seen.

2. “And declare to you”

a) This was John’s personal testimony.
b) All who had seen Jesus personally had this special privilege of being able to make this declaration.

3. The content of John’s declaration

a) “The life was manifested”
i) Jesus was the Life Giver.
ii) But He Himself may be called “The life” and this was manifested to the apostles and others.
b) “That eternal life which was with the Father”
i) This was John’s opening line concerning the eternal existence of Jesus (John 1:1).
ii) Jesus is aptly and forthrightly declared as “the eternal life”.
c) “Manifested to us”
i) Many saw Jesus perform mighty miracles and were astonished by the power He possessed.
ii) But only to a small band of apostles did Jesus manifest Himself fully and profoundly.
iii) John wrote with great conviction and bore powerful testimony of the Divine identity of the Lord Jesus Christ. He was no ordinary man. He was the eternal Word of life.
