"Do you not judge those who are inside?"

Text: 1 Corinthians 5:12

JUDGING

Once again, the issue of “judging” comes up. Paul summed up his writing on this subject with this word. Good and wise judgment must be made!

“For what have I to do with judging those also who
are outside? Do you not judge those who are inside?
But those who are outside God judges.
Therefore ‘put away from yourselves the evil person.'”
1 Corinthians 5:12-13

1. “Judging those also who are outside”

a) This is a reference to those who do not believe in the Lord.
b) They are outside the kingdom of God.
c) They are people of the world.
d) Paul would not stand in judgment of them.

2. “But those who are outside God judges”

a) Will the people of the world be judged?
b) Yes! God Himself will judge them one day!

3. “Do you not judge those who are inside”

a) Those who are “inside” are people who have professed faith.
b) They belong to a church (in this instance, the Corinthian church).
c) The church was meant to judge those who have immoral values in the church community.
d) The Corinthians, however, had failed to judge the wicked and immoral person in the church!

4. “Therefore ‘put away from yourselves the evil person'”

a) This would require the following:
i) Ascertaining the facts.
ii) Concluding the findings that the person concerned is indeed an “evil person”.
iii) He is like leaven and is “impure”.
b) Appropriate action must be taken.
i) The evil person must be “put away”.
ii) There must be no fellowship with the person.
iii) He must be disciplined by the church till he has repented.
