"Your glorying is not good."

Text: 1 Corinthians 5:6

AN INAPPROPRIATE RESPONSE

The Corinthian church made an inappropriate response to the vexing problem of gross immorality in its midst! Paul had to take them to task on this matter!

“Your glorying is not good.
Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump?
Therefore purge out the old leaven,
that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened.
For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us.”
1 Corinthians 5:6-7

1. “Your glorying is not good”

a) The word “glorying” is sometimes translated as “boasting”.
b) What this means:
i) The Corinthians were “smug” about their approach.
ii) There was certainly no sense of remorse.
iii) They virtually accepted the situation instead of querying it.

2. “A little leaven”

a) On the surface, it may have been seen as if it is “a small thing”.
b) Paul saw it as “a little leaven”.
c) And like yeast, it would permeate the dough.
d) Every part of the church community would feel the impact of the presence of the yeast (leaven).

3. “Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us”

a) This imagery was effectively used.
b) Christ Jesus, is indeed the Passover Lamb.

4. The celebration of the Passover

a) Leaven was carefully sought out throughout the house before Passover can be celebrated.
b) Yeast in any product is sought out and thrown away.
c) This is the reference to “old yeast”.

5. “That you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened”

a) At Passover, only unleavened bread is used.
b) Unleavened bread represents “purity” or “holiness”.
c) Believers are meant to be pure and holy.
